Obstetrics and Midwifery Care

At Wombkeepers Scottsdale
Picture

Why choose Wombkeepers for your Pregnancy?

Unlike typical obstetrics offices, we offer Integrative, Comprehensive Maternity Care. This means:

Low Patient-Doctor, Patient-Midwife Ratios

In the same way that low student-teacher ratios improve education, low patient-doctor ratios improve healthcare, especially maternity care. At Wombkeepers, we accept a limited number of patients per provider and each provider makes a commitment to be present for their own patients' births. This means we will not assign your care to a provider who will be on a scheduled vacation when you are due and we do not have a rotating call schedule; your doctor and midwife are on call for you, with only occasional exceptions.  Appointments are scheduled for a minimum of 30 minutes, meaning our office is calm and your visits unhurried and, most days, you will enter our office and immediately be seen. On the day of your delivery, your provider will be by your side during your labor.

Maternity Wellness Services fully included for all patients, at no extra cost, including:

  • Doula for labor and delivery for all patients
  • Comprehensive Antenatal and Postpartum Education and Support via our Empowered Motherhood Program: Conscious Childbirth Preparation for Low-Intervention Birth, Mind-body relaxation techniques for each trimester, birth, and the postpartum, Nutrition Guidance for each trimester and the postpartum, Parenting preparation and Infant CPR, Prenatal Yoga, Antenatal Breastfeeding Preparation
  • Group Postpartum Lactation Support
  • Individual Lactation Counselling*
  • Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Groups
  • Individual and Couple's Counselling*

Holistic approach to your healthcare

Using the principals of Integrative Medicine, as defined by the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Health, we consider ourselves partners in our patients' health and healing. All factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are taken into consideration during your care, including mind, body, spirit, and community, with appropriate use of both conventional and alternative methods that facilitate the body's preventative and healing responses. Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive are used whenever possible, but we neither reject conventional medicine nor accept alternative therapies uncritically. For example, we will recommend that you eat a diet that will strengthen your immune system and minimize inflammation, while also recommending you receive appropriate vaccinations or medications. Good medicine is based in good science and is inquiry-driven and open to new paradigms. Health promotion and prevention are key to our approach.

Support for your birth preferences

While our team specializes in natural births, we care for all types of patients, who are planning all types of births, and want a unique, personal approach to their care,  including: epidural births, high risk pregnancies, planned cesarean deliveries, twin pregnancies with planned cesarean or vaginal twin delivery, and VBAC's after one or more cesarean.

How to Know if you have a VBAC- friendly Provider...

Beautiful, state-of the art facilities for Delivery

Whether you choose to birth at our affiliated hospital, HonorHealth Shea, or our onsite birthing center, The Renewal Center for Birth, you will meet your baby in a comfortable, beautiful environment with a focus on the safety and wellbeing of you and your baby.

Intensive Postpartum Patient care with weekly visits

The first weeks home with a new baby are often the most challenging a woman experiences. We have come to recognize that women need so much more than a single postpartum visit, so we see all our new mothers weekly in the first month after delivery, addressing any problems with healing, breastfeeding, and depression or anxiety, as well as offering a network of support with our counselors, lactation consultants, and doulas.

Meet Dr. Michelle Aristizabal

Picture
Michelle Aristizabal, M.D, FACOG received her medical degree from the University of Arizona, College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ and, as of 2021, is pursuing a fellowship with the Integrative Medicine with the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.
As a board certified Obstetrician Gynecologist, Dr. Aristizabal is highly skilled in all areas of general Obstetrics and Gynecology, including all areas of general gynecologic surgery. She is also an expert in the integration of natural birth approaches into standard prenatal care and the hospital setting. She is the author of  Natural Labor and Birth: An Evidenced Based Guide to the Natural Birth Plan.
In 2013, Dr. Aristizabal opened Wombkeepers OB/GYN and Maternity Wellness Center in Montclair, NJ, where she personally delivered over 2,500 babies, working tirelessly to offer the community of Montclair alternative birthing options. In 2020, she returned to her home town in Arizona, where she will continue her work with Wombkeepers, bringing her years of expertise and support of low-intervention models of care to the Scottsdale community and the larger Phoenix Valley.
She is excited to pioneer a new approach to prenatal care through the development of a Wombkeepers location dedicated exclusively to the care of women during their pregnancy and postpartum period, as well as establish Scottsdale's first free-standing birthing center.
Dr. A, as she is called by many of her patients, is an extremely special doctor who really cares about her patients. She takes the time to sit and talk with new  mothers, getting to know them, and addressing their needs.  In the delivery room, she is calm, caring, and patient, with an enormous respect for the birthing process. She is dedicated to working with her patients to birth their babies in the way they wish, while safeguarding the process.
She is also committed to improving the health of women worldwide and has provided care to women in Eastern Africa as part of medical mission trips. She has been married for fifteen years to her college sweetheart, who she met while studying English Literature at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and is a proud mother of two beautiful children. She enjoys hiking, writing and painting during her free time.
